What to Know About Moissanite

Posted by Skeie's Jewelers on

Discovered by a French chemist, this rare silicone carbide mineral is a dazzling alternative to diamond, and comes in every shape and carat size you can dream of!

Is Moissanite the same as diamond?

These days, Moissanite is a lab-made stone and is widely available. It comes in the same shapes you'd find in a diamond, and even in larger sizes it has a killer price point and ranks high in durability and hardness, making it a great alternative for your engagement ring.

Moissanite also has a high refractory index, meaning you gets TONS of fire and spectral color in your gemstone - those are the elements that make your stone sparkle, and isn't that what we love the most?! It's also available in a variety of colors, including green, black, pink, and more.

Can you set Moissanite in any of your engagement ring settings?

We have a wide variety of designer ring settings - and almost every single one is customizable for the center stone, meaning you have an endless array of options, including moissanite!

We source beautifully cut, glistening moissanite so your ring is guaranteed to sparkle - set up an appointment with our specialists below to get started.

Moissanite vs. Lab-Grown Diamond

Both stones have seen extraordinary growth in the industry; both are lab-made stones, come in tons of shapes and sizes, and are great options for your ring.

A lab-grown diamond is chemically the same as a natural diamond, meaning it will look identical to the naked eye (even then, it can be tough to tell!)

While Moissanite is also technically colorless, it has a whiter appearance face-up and the flashes of color can look a little more faded when your ring gets dirty (by the way, we offer complimentary ring cleaning for life!)

A moissanite will run around $600/carat, a lab-grown will go around $1200/carat, and a natural diamond will start around $6000/carat and go from there depending on the specs.

Moissanite and lab-grown diamonds both have unpredictable market demand, meaning the dollar value may decline over time and it may not have equal trade-in/trade-up or resale value over the years.

Talking to your partner about what you want to prioritize in your ring is a great first place to start - do you want to maximize carat weight? Cut? Clarity? Long term value? These are all good to consider as you're deciding what's best for you - and that's really what it comes down to!

Our team of Bridal specialists are available to help answer all of your ring-related questions and help guide you through designing your dream engagement ring.

"We chose moissanite because I wanted a big look, but wanted to stay within our budget. I absolutely love the bright flashes of light and sparkle I get with it!"
